  • measuring tape
  • pencil
  • carpenters' square
  • table saw or circular saw

  • drill with 1/4" bit
  • painters' tape
  • letter template (see below)
  • carbon paper
  • black acrylic paint
  • artist burshes
  • satin spray varnish

Letter Templates (PDFs)

Making the Tiles

Measure and mark the board 7-15/16” from the end. Cut at this line with a saw (Image 1). Measure, mark and repeat the cut for as many wood tiles as you will need.
Sand the flat surfaces and gently round the edges and corners with the sander (Image 2). Wipe away sawdust with a lightly damp cloth.
On one side of each wood tile mark a line about 1-1/2 inches from the top. At the center of this line mark a spot. Wrap a piece of painters’ tape around a drill bit leaving 1/4” exposed. Slowly drill at the line not going past the painters’ tape (Image 3). This hole will serve as the hanger.

Finishing the Tiles

Print the letter templates needed and cut them out on the black lines. Layer a piece of carbon paper with the ink side down between the template and a wood tile. Line up the top edge of the paper and the carbon paper with the top of the tile. Secure the template and carbon paper to the wood tile temporarily with painters’ tape.
Use a pencil to carefully outline the letter and number on the template (Image 1). Then remove the template and carbon paper. Discard the template, but the carbon paper can be reused several times before discarding.
Use paint brushes to outline and fill in the numbers and letters with black acrylic paint (Image 2). Allow the paint to dry completely before sealing with satin spray varnish. Allow varnish to dry completely.
Mark a level line and make a mark where the center of the first letter should go. From that mark measure 8-1/4” to the next mark. Repeat for the number of tiles you are using. Place a nail in the wall at the marks and hang the holes in the back of each tile over the nails.
